Recently, I bought a cookbook - now, six years of being married has told me that no matter how many cookbooks I buy, the recipes I make everyday at home still adopt only about 1% of the recipes I have access to at home. But I still bought this. For two reasons: Ayurvedic cooking. And the book is published by The Art Of Living International Foundation. Given that Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is my guru, I had to know what his way with food is all about.
This is a fabulous book. Especially the first few chapters. Most of the book is recipes, both desi and gourmet, made simply with mostly easy to find ingredients, and sometimes with ingredients that you may find in an Ayurveda store. But no hassles, nothing is tough to source. The recipes are simple, to the point, functional, lucidly explained and most comprise of limited ingredients so its not like you are going to go nuts cooking from the book and give up.
But coming back to the first few pages of the book - it explains what Ayurvedic cooking is all about, how foods pair, how they don't, what the constitution of food truly is, the recommended practices while you eat and prayers to be said before you eat. Cooking techniques, with great focus on steaming, are also mentioned. I have tried a bunch of recipes from the book and adopted the steaming method of cooking vegetables recently and I must say, I am converted. And very, very impressed. If food is a vital part of your life in that you love cooking and prefer keeping the kitchen under your control as against your maid's commands, want to explore a holistic method of cooking food that promotes good health, sattva and vegetarian eating, then this book is for you.
You could buy it on eBay India and on Amazon.
