I am scared of thalis, I am. You know my dilemma already - I hate wasting food, I hate overeating - and that's Catch 22.
But refusing a luncheon at Rajdhani, which does happen to be the only Chhappan Bhog Thali place I like? That's the most severe dilemma of all.
Rajdhani has this new concept that they have come up with, they call it Rasovara. if you thought Rajdhani Thalis were royal, you are about to be taken to a whole new level of desi dining. This is food for the kings.
You are welcomed with a raj Tilak, a little Aarti.
For a place that opened up so recently in Palladium, Lower Parel, it fills up surprisingly fast so - make reservations!
The menu is pretty diverse and sticks to food from Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. So it covers all kinds of palettes.
See the menu? There's that Paan Shot at the end? Well, if you remember my last post, you'd know why I'd keep going back just for that!
Our head chef for the day - famed to be Rajdhani's best inhouse head chef. We knew were in good hands.
Every table had these tags so you knew who your attending server was. SO you could call him respectfully, and address him by his name.
The starters came forst - unlike at a regular Rajdhani, Rasovara gives you your time with your courses. Now, I am a Dahi Vada hater - can't stand it. But I actually really liked this and asked for a second one too. The Dhoklas were awesome, the man could have eaten just those all day. Spongy, soft and fresh.
After that starters, we got this feisty looking bell metal plates. Which started filling up. Subzis on this side.
Dals and Kadhis and Dal Baati on the other (LOVE that Dal Baati! And that white kadhi!)
Bajra rotlas with makkhan. Yum. Take me back, somebody!
there was some chutney - red garlic, pretty awesome. Green chilli Thecha, which was so fiery, I tasted it once and never went back. And Churma, which helped me get over the first taste of Thecha.
A mini basket of rotis. Puran Poli, jowar roti, phulka, all with makkhan and ghee.
Roasted papad, chura papad.
And this is going to make Shirin SO jealous. Jalebis with Rabri. *faints* *I NEED THIS NOW* *I'M SERIOUS*
So I don't like pillowy sweet syrup soaked Bong sweets. Which this one resembled. Called Kesar Vati. i was going to just avoid this. Then I bit into it by mistake. I ate the whole thing after that.
Vermicelli Kheer. VERY yummy.
Chhaas. To wash it all down. God knows we needed that one so badly.
PAAN SHOTS!!! Wheeeeee!
Trivia: An empty plate set at Rasovara, made in pure bell metal, weighs roughly 2.5kgs and is breakable so the servers are super careful when they carry them. Authentic.
Forgot to mention the halwa. Almond Halwa. I will say no more but I would kill for this. I really would.
Mukhwas. And paan. What's not to love?
Our service was laidback, the ambiance was quite nice too. Would love to see what they do with those lights in the night so will go back. And will definitely go back for the Almond Halwa, the Dhokla, the Paan Shots, the Dahi Vada, the Kesar Vati, the Jalebi with Rabri, the Kadhi - see? I am doing it again. Mostly falling for all the desserts, most unlike me. I am a salt person but Rasovara and Rajdhani know how to work magic with Indian desserts.
Please go try them out. [The price for the Rajdhani Thali is usually 350 but the Rasovar experience comes to you at between 549 and 649 bucks (weekday lunch and dinner, 649 on weekends throughout the day)].
